Erasmus+: From the Classroom to the Workshop, From the Workshop to Europe

For far too long, part of our education system has confused education with the accumulation of content. We have assumed that learning mainly consists of listening, memorising, reproducing information and passing examinations. Yet social and professional reality demands much more. Young people need solid knowledge, but they also need to know how to apply it, make decisions, solve problems, collaborate with others and operate confidently in authentic professional environments.
This is particularly evident in Vocational Education and Training, although the argument should not be restricted to VET. Secondary Education also needs a much stronger connection with reality, technology, companies, trades, applied science and the competencies students will need beyond the classroom. Knowledge matters enormously; what is increasingly difficult to defend is knowledge taught as though the world outside the school gates did not exist.
Aviation makes the problem impossible to ignore
Consider Higher Vocational Training programmes related to aircraft maintenance. A student may study regulations, mechanics, avionics, safety procedures, technical documentation and professional English. They may become familiar with terms such as "airframe", "landing gear", "wiring harness", "fault isolation" and "airworthiness". But much of that knowledge loses its educational power if the student never enters a hangar, never interprets a "task card", never observes how a maintenance team is organised and never sees how technical decisions are made under real professional conditions.
Technical education cannot be built only around academic simulations. Students need contact with tools, workshops, professional documentation, companies and working environments where they discover why precision, communication and responsibility matter. In aviation, the difference between knowing a definition and understanding a procedure is especially clear. Expressions such as "line maintenance", "base maintenance", "release to service" or "safety procedures" should not merely be vocabulary items for an examination. They belong to a professional culture.
The sentence is deliberately provocative, but the problem behind it is serious. I am not defending an exclusively utilitarian model of education, nor am I suggesting that every subject must produce an immediate economic return. Education must create critical, educated and responsible citizens capable of understanding the world. But precisely for that reason, it must also provide them with the tools needed to participate in that world independently.
Erasmus+ is more than mobility
This is where Erasmus+ can play a decisive role. It is often described primarily as a mobility programme. That description is correct, but incomplete. Its deeper educational value appears when mobility becomes a structured opportunity to learn in another professional, cultural and linguistic environment.
A student undertaking a professional placement abroad has to adapt to schedules, procedures, internal rules, workplace expectations and different communication styles. They have to ask questions, listen carefully, observe, take responsibility and cope with uncertainty. They learn that mistakes must be reported, that punctuality has consequences, that safety leaves little room for improvisation and that teamwork depends on accurate communication.
That experience is particularly powerful in VET because it connects three dimensions that schools too often teach separately: technical competence, language competence and professional behaviour. English ceases to be simply a school subject and becomes a working tool. The workshop ceases to be a classroom exercise and becomes part of a real production or maintenance environment. Europe ceases to be an abstract concept and becomes a network of places where a young person may study, train and eventually work.
Well-designed mobility should connect classroom knowledge with professional practice, language learning with real communication, and qualifications with a wider European labour market. The objective is not simply to travel: it is to return more competent, more autonomous and more open-minded.
We should therefore question the idea that an international placement is an attractive extra reserved for a small number of adventurous students. In many areas of Vocational Training it can be part of the educational core. A period in France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Malta or elsewhere can expose students to different equipment, procedures, company cultures and expectations. It develops technical skills, but also adaptability, initiative and maturity.
Perhaps even more importantly, it changes expectations. A young person who has worked for several weeks or months in another country begins to see the labour market differently. Opportunities are no longer limited to the immediate surroundings of home. Qualifications acquire a European dimension. Languages gain a purpose. Mobility becomes imaginable rather than exceptional.
Schools must look outwards
We cannot be satisfied with educational institutions that remain disconnected from the societies they are meant to serve. Schools and VET centres should maintain stable relationships with companies, universities, public administrations, technology centres and European partners. Students should be able to see that what they learn has a purpose beyond the textbook and beyond the examination.
We need more companies entering classrooms and more students entering companies. More laboratories, workshops, professional visits, international projects and collaborative challenges. More languages used to solve real problems and fewer languages studied only to pass tests. More teachers able to connect theory with practice, and more educational leadership willing to create those connections.
Europe needs qualified people who are technically competent, mobile, adaptable and capable of collaborating in international environments. Spain needs the same. Erasmus+ can become one of the keys to that transformation, not because travelling is educational by definition, but because well-designed mobility can connect students with professional, cultural and human realities that profoundly broaden their education.
Perhaps it is time to stop treating Erasmus+ as a decorative addition to the education system. In some sectors, it can be part of the route from the classroom to a profession, from theory to practice, and from a qualification to a genuine opportunity for the future.
